A long assignment with no co-worker

An interpreter has been booked for a 4-day course where one Deaf person is attending. The interpreter accepted the job on the condition that another interpreter would be booked.

On arrival they find that the client has changed their mind and hasn’t booked a second interpreter.

  • Should the interpreter work or not?
  • If they do work, what are the health and safety issues?
  • What about access for the Deaf person if the interpreter gets tired?
  • Should the interpreter charge more for working alone?
  • Will it encourage the person who booked to do the same thing in future if they 'get away with it' this time?
  • What are the consequences if the interpreter doesn’t work?
  • Should the interpreter still charge a cancellation fee?
  • What other options are there?
