Wrong booking information
An interpreter is booked for an assignment with 12 people. They have had almost no preparation material, and they haven’t been informed on the agenda of the meeting.
On arrival the interpreter finds that they have been given the wrong information and it’s a large conference. Over 100 Deaf and 200 hearing people are attending.
There are presentations throughout the day, with many from Deaf presenters.
There is only the interpreter and a co-interpreter, who was also misinformed, and there is only 30 minutes to prepare.
- Is it actually possible?
- What are the health and safety issues for interpreting without a break?
- If they agree to interpret will it be possible to offer reasonable quality of access for Deaf or hearing people?
- If they do interpret and provide a poor service are the interpreters to blame?
- Could it damage the interpreters' professional reputation?
- If they don’t interpret the conference can’t go ahead, is that reasonable?
- If they don’t interpret could they be held responsible for preventing the conference from taking place?
