Short term memory (number 3)

Resources Required (number 3)

A group of three people.

The task

  1. Three people should be labeled A, B & C.
  2. All three people need to think of a short narrative or story to be told in spoken English or BSL. The story should contain ten facts (including numbers and proper nouns) and quite a lot of detail. It may help to make a written summary of the facts and details.
  3. Person A tells a story to person B. Person C must not be able to hear or see this.
  4. Person B then re-tells person C while Person A listens. Person A makes a note of  any facts and details missed in the re-told version.
  5. Person A then feeds back to person B on any missed facts and details in the re-told story.
  6. You can choose to talk about the facts and details that were missed. Were any particular kinds of facts or details often missed?  Were more facts or details missed if they came at a certain place in the story?
  7. The roles then swap around, so that all three members of the group get a turn telling their story, retelling a story, and listening.
  8. This exercise can be repeated to check or practice short-term memory skills.
